The family loves MILKSHAKES. Both Nabeel and his father are fond of milk and personally, I hate plain milk, so a tall glass of thick, creamy, chilled milkshake is always welcome. We relish it in varied flavours, anytime of the day. God knows till now, how many flavours of milkshakes I must have created? Anything I get hold of fresh fruits, left-over desserts, chocolate bars, candy, dried fruits, candied fruits, ice-creams, syrups, etc is thrown in the blender along with the basic milkshake ingredients to create a signature flavour.
Today’s recipe is of a fig and apricot milkshake which I prepared for Nabeel, especially to combat the summer heat. He returns from school in peak afternoon all exhausted and soaked in sweat showing no interest in eating freshly prepared lunch – clearly, indicating loss of appetite. Now, that is not good :-(. So I thought of putting his favourite ingredients, milk + dried fruits + ice-cream, together to make a milkshake that can replace lunch while keeping the nutrition intake intact. In particular, he likes figs and orange apricots over other dried fruits so they were the chosen flavours of the milkshake.
For all milkshakes the basic ingredients I used are milk, sugar and vanilla ice-cream. Ice-cream helps give some bulk to the milkshake while imparting a subtle flavour. Sugar or any other sweetener is added subject to the flavour; if it’s a very sweet fruit like mango or chickoo then one doesn’t need to use them at all. I usually don’t use soaked dried fruits for milkshakes as they tend to over blend and turn into a puree which is not what I want. Few bits of the flavour are fun to chew on while slurping the milkshake. Keeping the basic milkshake ingredients constant you can create fun flavours too.
Fig & Apricot Milkshake Recipe
Makes 1 tall glass
Milk – ¾ glass
Vanilla Ice cream – 2 scops
Dried Fig & Apricot – 3 each I used the orange apricots you can also use the brown ones
Sugar or Honey – to sweeten, as required
Few ice cubes, if you need to serve it chilled immediately
- Put everything in a blender jar and blend till all ingredients mix well. Do not puree the dried fruits, leave a few bits that can be chewed.
- Serve chilled
