The eternal problem of kids outgrowing clothes

womans-arms-full-of-clothes

Kids grow at a lightning speed, mentally as well as physically and one of the bad things about this is having piles of clothes that are seldom used or never been used. It’s really disheartening to see how children outgrow the clothes that were picked with so much love and care, in no time.

Clothes for kids these days are available in plenty with an outfit dedicated to every occasion or event of their growing years. No doubt that is a good thing and gives you ample of choice to maintain that trendy and cool image of the child but all this comes with a price, a heavy one to be precise. The first birthday outfit or the designer traditional dress for baby’s first family wedding definitely made the child look dapper and earn lot of praises but it also made you lose out on some big bucks. To see the outfit hang in the wardrobe with no takers makes you think if it was all worth it in the end.

I remember when Nabeel was about 3 months old I bought him a cute little romper with a cow patch on it. Back then he was fond of animals and thought this was the apt clothing for him. It was purchased from a high –end brand for a hefty price; you know when everything is new; the baby, the parenting, the cute clothes, etc the budget takes a back seat for sometime 😉 So there was no such occasion I had in mind for the dress to be used but it turned out I precisely made him wear the dress for a 2 hour odd outing and even before I knew he had outgrown it. My heart sank!

outgrown_clothing

Spending too much on kids clothing which don’t even last that long is an eternal problem. Even if you try to keep it minimal or within the set limit, kids clothing budget always seem to go overboard.  I know most moms are helpless in such a situation. We definitely want the best for our child but the guilt of overspending always lingers.

On an average, until the age of 13, kids grow 3 to 4 inches a year. This means you will for sure land up with an above the ankle pants or a short tee, something beyond your control.

I enjoy shopping for Nabeel and like to keep his wardrobe up to date but at the same time hate spending on clothes that will outgrow in few months. As much as I try to shop wisely, I am often guilty of giving into temptation and pick up expensive or more pieces of clothing for Nabeel. And, when he outgrows them even before the seams open up, it really hurts. Also at times the fashion changes too quickly and in order to keep up with it, the “old fashioned” clothes need to be discarded. It’s rare to find a good balance of stylish kids wear and affordability.

To overcome the remorse, many moms find a way of retaining the clothing in some way or the other or try and hand it down to people who will appreciate the clothes. I usually sort out Nabeel’s outgrown clothes once a year and pass them to lesser privileged kids back in our village. At least this satisfies my soul.  How do you deal with this dilemma of kids outgrowing clothes? Are you a heavy spender when it comes to buying clothes for your child? Are there any experiences with this regard you might want to share?

Mini Peanut Butter Cupcakes

peanut butter cupcakesThe cupcakes are basic and light with chocolate beautifully complimenting the peanut butter flavour.

And so, Nabeel is currently enjoying his summer break in full swing, ensuring I am on my toes 24 hours, or at least till he is awake. His constant needs to play, eat, read, and have fun sucks out all my energy and time. I am enjoying no doubt, but the everyday dilemma of “how to keep him busy? is tiring me completely. This year am adopting “no summer class” policy (hope to stick to it till the end) which means all me time will be converted to only mommy time..phew!

peanut butter cake

So, yesterday, we spent time in the kitchen baking cupcakes…something both of us thoroughly enjoy. We baked these cutsie mini cupcakes flavored with Peanut Butter and slathered with chocolate. Peanut butter gained entry into my kitchen for the first time and soon it was used in a baking recipe…something I generally do with all my new found ingredients :-).

We spent our evening snacking on these beauties while watching our 100th session (no exaggeration, really) of Kung Fu Panda.

Heading to the park now, please find this simple recipe of Mini Peanut Cupcakes, below. I adapted it from here.

Review – Hulla Gulla Kids

Have you given up looking for decent songs to play at your child’s birthday party? Do you dread at the thought of your child not only dancing to but also humming rowdy Bollywood dance numbers?
Presenting Hulla Gulla Kids (HGK), an online source of audio-video dance along songs, for kids aged 2 to 8, with hilarious lyrics, upbeat music and educative content.

HullaGullaKids
Hulla Gulla Kids songs are curated and executed by an enthusiastic team of mothers and approved by an in-house Kids Squad.
Mirabelle and Meera, 2 creative moms from the fields of music and art put their years of experience into the making of these dance along family songs that revolve around everyday Indian life and culture. The soundtracks are original, very Indian and have decent lyrics which you wouldn’t mind your kids singing.
“While nursery rhymes are in place they are not good enough for today’s kids who want their own songs with modern music, fun dance steps and cool lyrics” explains Mirabelle, who has written, sung, choreographed and also featured in all the song videos along with her cute daughter Sivaanaa.

“The basic idea of creating such kind of content is to keep kids connected with their Indian roots by way of fun, humour and clean entertainment” explains Mirabelle.

Launched in November 2016 the channel has already captured quite an audience with it 3 foot –tapping songs.
For the very first song they picked scenes from everyday life found on the Indian streets and weaved a fun and upbeat composition which garnered HGK lot of recognition and praise from across the globe. Especially mothers, who were happy to play it on loop for their kids without worrying much about the content.
Their second song is educative and teaches kids about recycling simultaneously encouraging them to practice it on an everyday basis. The most recent song is based on cooking and encourages families to cook, eat and have fun together.

Review – Little Monsters, Chandivali

little-monster

I often take Nabeel to indoor soft play areas along with his gang of friends as we moms get some time for ourselves while we know the kids are safe and happy on their own. Most play areas are concentrated in South Bombay, our side of the town has a few but nothing close to home. So when, Little Monsters, a fairly new entrant in the indoor play area category opened its doors near us, we decided to check it out.

Little Monsters is the joint venture of 2 women who were bored of their banking jobs and wanted to get into the unexplored children edutainment industry. After much thought and consideration they decided to have a play area one which allows free unrestricted and undirected play in a comfortable and secure setting.

Equipment is harmless and the place is clean, which is the most important aspect I look for in an indoor play zone.

soft-play-area

It has 2 levels, divided thoughtfully, between the café below and the play area above. It’s an average sized play area designed with the transport theme in mind and having the usual’s like trampoline, ball pool and slides. There are few life sized games namely Jenga, Snakes and ladders, Connect 4 where parents and kids can play together. Equipment is harmless and the place is clean, which is the most important aspect I look for in an indoor play zone.

Little Monsters is well supervised, owners along with staff are vigilant and watch the kids while they play. The place is quite popular among locals as most of the kids have a monthly pass and usually come in on a daily basis for some recreation. Since its inception, 2 months ago, the place has already hosted 30 parties making it a popular choice among moms to celebrate their kid’s birthday. The café is ideal for mommies to indulge in some me time. We also checked out the menu which is decently priced and offers regular kids favourites.

  • Hourly rate: Rs.250/-
  • Socks compulsory to enter play area
  • Parking not available
  • Ideal for 2 to 10 year old kids
  • For more details checkout their website: Little Monsters

Fruit Skewers for breakfast – artistic & fulfilling

5) Fruit Shashlik – Fruits are the most ideal thing to consume for breakfast. Lay an array of fruits at the table and ask kids to arrange them in an artistic way on skewers to make Fruit Shashlik or Fruit Kabobs. Instead of diced / cubed pieces of fruits use special cutters to cut fruit and make the entire breakfast activity interesting and fulfilling. Honey or maple syrup can be drizzled on the fruit skewers for added flavour.
