Today is Grandparents day and it’s time to #LoveJatao to them

Nabeel has is maternal grandparents living in the same city while his paternal grandparents live in the same state. Today he cannot spend the day with any of them physically but since morning they have been on his mind. Post having wished them he has been busy selecting pictures (of him with his grandparents) to create a collage which he plans to gift them on their next meeting. Kids are enthusiastic especially when you ask them to do something for their grandparents, after all their relationship is so pure and honest!

Grandparents make the world a better place!

It is commonly said that Grandparents spoil their grandchildren, which is true they spoil them real by showering true love and nothing but true love. I have been pampered by my grandparents and love seeing how Nabeel enjoys the same pampering from his grandparents.

Grandparents are magicians in true sense

DSC02819

In today’s world of nuclear parenting where the day starts and ends with parents, children year to spend time with their grandparents. Parents tend to be harsh and unreasonable at times but grandparents are always loving and caring. They have their own way of handling a situation and comforting the child. Grandparents are magicians in true sense.

Grandparents definitely make the world a better place but the question is, are we doing anything to make the world a better place for them? All they need is our time, they have all the love to fill in that time.

Nabeel is very much attached to his grandparents. Though he might not talk or meet them often but he misses them deeply. The spark in his eyes says it all when he learns that dada-dadi or nana-nani are coming home. I have seen him sob secretly when they leave and I have seen him throw all possible tantrums when they are around. I believe the bond Nabeel shares with his grandparents is very similar to what most grandparents and grandkids share – a bond of trust, respect and above all affection!

Grandparents definitely make the world a better place but the question is, are we doing anything to make the world a better place for them? All they need is our time, they have all the love to fill in that time.
This Grandparents day vow to reach out to your grandparents and tell them how your childhood has been so memorable with their presence and unbiased love! #LoveJatao

Rendezvous with Meghana & Shauravi – Founders of Slurrp Farm

We are in conversation with Meghana Narayan and Shauravi Malik, founders of Slurrp Farm and mommies with a mission to make Indian kids eat healthy!

Slurrp Farm

Shauravi with her 3 yr old son & Meghana with her 4 yr old daughter

When Meghana & Shauravi could not find healthy and yummy food options for their children in the Indian market, they decided to make some! As their tag line goes “founded by two mothers, for their children, and yours”

Read on to find out all about their journey till now

BAM: Tell us how did Slurrp Farm come into being?
SF: Both of us have lived and worked in London. On our trips home, we were bombarded with requests from friends and family members to bring healthy, organic and yummy products for their children. This had us thinking. Moreover, on moving back to India we realized there was indeed a dearth of good commercial products for Indian kids and just like us, many parents were worried and helpless about this very fact. So, we decided to do something about it and thus, Slurrp Farm was born.

BAM: What is Slurrp Farm all about?
SF: Slurrp Farm is all about bringing 100% yummy-ness onto your family’s plate in the form of natural and healthy food that is made using a combination of traditional recipes and real ingredients.

BAM: Why stress so much on creating a healthy commercial product when kids are mostly fed homemade food and nothing can be healthier than that!
SF: We are passionate about raising awareness of healthy eating for children and giving busy parents like us, the convenience needed in terms of being able to find food options which are as good as what we would make at home.
A huge part of what motivates us is the desire to return to simpler times, in response to the disarray in the way people are eating nowadays. This has led to several problems including the worrying prevalence of childhood obesity and diseases such as diabetes and cancer, which are often linked to the quality of our food. We believe that in some sense we need to go back to eating like our grandparents did, to question and understand the provenance of ingredients, and to eat organic whenever we can.

BAM: What is your source of inspiration and innovation for the products that you come up with?
SF: Our inspiration is definitely memories of our grandmothers’ and mothers’ way of feeding us. While everything fed to us was not always yummy, it was definitely natural and wholesome.
Meghana was often forced to gulp down a Ragi drink because of it goodness, that’s where the innovation bit came in, to replace that force with willingness.

We constantly strive at creating something yummy that kids will love to eat and mothers will be happy to feed.

BAM: What is the USP of your products?
SF: Currently we are offering Cereals and Cookies. These are available in never heard of combinations and flavours, and made using whole grains, without any added flavours or preservatives. We don’t use any transfat and we use much less sugar than comparables. We are very committed to sourcing the best quality of ingredients.

Our recipes are always tested by lots of children and parents. The products are what you would create in your kitchen using natural ingredients.

BAM: At a personal level how do you ensure your kids eat healthy and some tips you would like to share with fellow mothers?
SF: We ensure that our kids eat vegetables, fruit, and diverse set of grains and a bit of nuts on a daily basis. All our meals include significant amount of vegetables – we started early with them and hence broccoli and carrot feature on our kids list of favourites.
Over the years we have made changes such that now you will find very little to no white sugar or refined flours in our kitchens. The best way to make kids eat healthy is to set right examples for them. We ourselves eat our greens!

Why it is important to take your child for a hearing test?

An enchanting Bharatnatyam performance, live “last-over” cricket skit and a 10-minute feat by a linguist, this is how I enjoyed one of the weekends of May.
These special performances were executed by special kids all of which had one thing in common – they all suffered from hearing loss. This was at the Cochlear™ Celebration event, where not only did I witness the performances but also learnt a great deal about hearing loss and it’s occurrence.

Hearing Loss in children
Deafness is as serious a problem as blindness. It is very common to get one’s eyes tested but seldom do we think of getting our ears checked for its proper functioning. Likewise, we never suspect our child/children would suffer from a hearing problem or be deaf because hearing problem can easily go unnoticed or is usually given less importance compared to blindness or other health issues.
The fact is, in India scores of kids are born deaf or suffer from some level of hearing loss, it is only wise to intervene early and get them tested by gauging the symptoms.
Babies begin to hear from their mother’s womb, starting from mother’s heartbeat gradually taking in other sounds. It is nearly impossible to know if your newborn is born deaf or suffers from partial hearing loss by just general observation. The young child is equally clueless about sounds and what it is to hear them. A child suffering from hearing loss resorts to lip reading giving an impression that everything is fine until one day the truth surfaces. Here is some reading you can do to find out the early symptoms of deafness or partial hearing in your child.

Cochlear™ celebrates the joy of hearing
It was a fine Sunday morning when I entered the huge Shamukhnanda hall, which was packed to the brim with a crowd that comprised of recipients, prospective implantees, clinicians and well-wishers of Cochlear Implants. The event in question – Cochlear Celebrations was organised by Cochlear India and ihear foundation to reach out to masses and educate them about how hearing loss and how implants are an ultimate solution to the problem. A lot of young recipients of Cochlear implants shared their experiences, while clinicians busted myths and shared great knowledge. Watch one such successful story of Jehan Daboo, an Olympian, here.

What are Cochlear™ Implants?
Cochlear implants are long term and effective hearing solution for people with severe to profound deafness. Their scope is beyond the reach of the most advanced hearing aids.
Unlike traditional hearing aids that amplify, or make sounds louder, a cochlear implant system can be a more effective hearing solution for certain people. A Cochlear implant is capable of directly stimulating the cochlea hearing nerve, bypassing the damaged area of the hearing pathway. Watch this video to understand the implant functioning better.

Parental Duty – Testing & Early Intervention. Why is it important?
At the event, an expert panel of doctors, audiologists and pediatricians discussed the vital role of parents in testing and then taking early decisions to bring back sound to a child’s life and help them lead a normal life.
Sharing below few videos where experts talk about importance of early intervention and why parents need to act fast for their own child’s benefit.

Video 1 – Dr. Milind Kirtane, ENT & Padma Shri (2014) and pioneer of Cochlear Implants in India urging parents to get their babies tested even if they appear normal.

Video 2 – How soon can hearing be tested reliably in babies? Paediatric Audiologist – Geeti Char explains.

Video 3 – Dr Samir Dalwai, developmental paediatrician, explaining why testing is important for all babies.

IMG_20170519_210737

As parents, I believe we are responsible for our child. It’s not only enough to take wise decisions for them, but more important to take them on time. Like we would get worried over minor illness and wounds it is important we get the child tested even if there is an iota of doubt when it comes to hearing. Hearing testing, as explained in above videos, is vital and needs to be done as part of general well-being check-up of the child.

Celebrating Mothers Everyday

We recently celebrated Mother’s Day but the truth is, a day, a year, a lifetime is not enough to thank and honour this very reason of our being. Mothers are an epitome of selfless love, and the world is blessed with extraordinary mothers who show us through their many ways what it is like to sacrifice with a smile and never expect anything in return.
Each mother has a story and every story is inspiring and worth sharing with the world. I have compiled a series of articles that document firsthand journeys of mothers in different situations and are a delight to read.

I am so glad to be in this era where being a mom is of one the most enjoyable experiences and doesn’t only limit to cooking, feeding and cleaning up after the kids. Do you as a mom identify with all these activities? If not, then probably you are not part of JAMM’s yet. What is JAMM’s you ask? Well, it is Mumbai based support group of moms which is based on one principle…no nonsense & only momsense.

JAMMS which stands for Journey about Mast Moms, is a Mumbai based support group for mothers by mothers. Initiated by Ritu Gorai in 2014, as a casual Whatsapp group with 24 members, the network now boasts of 5000 mothers smartly divided into 20 groups.

Me with Ritu Gorai

Jammies are divided as per their child’s age (first born) amongst the groups and then further divided as per their interests (movies, pets, books) & profession (doctors, bloggers, mompreneurs, advocates). Groups for expecting moms, grandmoms, mothers of special needs kids and single moms also exist. The show runs entirely on Whatsapp with the help of many volunteer mums helping Ritu manage and organize the groups.

Jammies not only connect on a daily basis virtually but also meet up for complimentary workshops, seminars, exhibitions, movie dates, power lunches, networking meets, playdates, etc.
